Man in Idaho With Unknown Identity Jailed For Stealing Identity of a Dead Child

A strange case in Idaho was recently taken to court involving a man with an unknown identity who stole the identity of a deceased child more than 2 decades ago. The unknown man used the child’s identity to obtain government funds, a passport, and to travel to other countries.

Somehow, despite not knowing the true identity of the man, a court found him guilty and sentenced him to 5 years in federal prison, which works, because in prison it won’t matter who he is.

A Man in Idaho With No Identity Was Just Sentenced For Stealing the Identity of a Dead Child

It does seem strange that in our age of technological advancement and where every move is tracked by some type of device, that this man was able to use the identity of a child who died in 1977 and authorities can’t figure out who the man actually is.

Details from the case were shared by the United States Attorney’s Office for the district of Idaho on August 25th. The press release says the man ‘whose identity remains unknown’ and who stole and used the identity of a deceased child for 25 years, was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison after the jury in Pocatello found him guilty of wire fraud, theft of government funds, aggravated identity theft, and other related charges.

Court records state that the identity of the child, Carlos Ramon Obregon who was shot and killed in LA in 1977, was used 23 years later, in 2000, to apply for a replacement social security card. With that card information, the fraudster obtained a United States passport and travelled to Mexico multiple times. He also used the child’s identity to obtain and renew an Idaho state ID card four separate times.

He also applied for and received government assistance totaling around $284,000. That assistance came from SSI, Medicaid, SNAP (food assistance), and economic impact payments.

Idaho Man With Unknown Identity Sentenced to 5 Years in Federal Prison For Stealing Identity of a Dead Child

After serving the 5 years sentence in federal prison, the man will be placed on 3 years of supervised release and be required to repay the nearly $284,000.

The Cassia County Jail roster has the 62-year-old man listed with the stolen last name of Obregon while some documents have his name as FNU LNU (first name unknown last name unknown) and no mugshot or booking photo is provided.
