Traffic Shifts on I-84 Between Jerome and Twin Falls Begin in September

If you commute between Jerome and Twin Falls on I-84, you'll want to pay close attention to some upcoming changes that start this weekend. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is preparing to shift traffic into the newly constructed lanes in the median as part of the ongoing interstate widening project. The shift starts this weekend and will continue over multiple weekends throughout September.

What You Can Expect

During these weekends, you're going to notice traffic shifts, lane restrictions, and ramp closures from 8 p.m. on Fridays to 6 a.m. on Mondays. If you typically take I-84 during that time, you might need to adjust your plans a bit.

For the first weekend (September 6-9), here’s what you should be ready for if you’re heading eastbound:

  • The South Jerome Interchange eastbound on-ramp will close.
  • The Twin Falls Interchange eastbound off-ramp will close.
  • Detours will be in place, so if you usually exit at the Twin Falls Interchange, you’ll need to take the detour to the South Jerome Interchange. Otherwise, your next chance to exit won’t be until the Eden Interchange, which is 9 miles east of Twin Falls.

Any way you look at it, there's going to be confusion, and more traffic will be moving onto GolfCourse Road, which doesn't typically take the full brunt of weekend commuter traffic. You'll want to give yourself some extra time and plan for delays.

For the second weekend (September 13-16), the project team will be shifting westbound I-84 traffic. Here’s what to expect if you’re heading westbound:

  • The South Jerome Interchange westbound off-ramp will close.
  • The Twin Falls Interchange westbound on-ramps will close.
  • Detours will be in place, and westbound lane changes and restrictions will occur.

Again, it’s a good idea to plan for extra time and check the detour map to familiarize yourself with the alternate routes.

Looking Ahead

After these weekends, once traffic has shifted into the median, here’s what you should be prepared for in the coming weeks:

  • E 400 South Road under I-84 will be closed for about a month starting mid-September.
  • Lane restrictions will happen at night, reducing I-84 to one lane in each direction. There may be occasional lane restrictions during the day as well.

The new traffic pattern will be sticking around until late 2025. So, if you're a regular commuter, this is something you'll need to adjust to for quite some time.

Plan Ahead for Delays

Jesse Barrus, ITD’s District 4 Engineer, encourages you to plan ahead and drive cautiously through this area. He also thanked everyone for their patience, acknowledging that the traffic shifts may cause delays. But in the end, these improvements will help accommodate Idaho’s rapid growth, part of Governor Little’s Leading Idaho program.

It’s worth mentioning that this construction project could be delayed if the weather doesn't cooperate, so things might shift around depending on the conditions.
