Why to Keep Watching and Cheering on the Boise State Broncos in 2025
The Boise State football season is rolling along, and hard as it is to believe, it is more than half over. It is safe to say that the season hasn't gone according to the fans' and the program's expectations. The season got off to a rocky start with a loss to South Florida, and then again was disappointed with a loss to Notre Dame. Despite these two losses, there was still a chance the Broncos could make the playoffs. That changed this last weekend with a loss to Fresno State at home, though. BSU fans are now wondering why they should keep watching this season, and what exactly the Broncos have to play for this year other than a bowl game, which they are already eligible for.
What Does Boise State Have to Play For?
The Fresno State loss for the Broncos stung. It was to a conference rival, and it was at home. It wasn't the fact that the team lost as much as the way they lost, getting outplayed at every level. These games happen, but not often around these parts. A year ago, the Broncos made the College Football Playoffs, and this year, those hopes are now done. Despite no playoffs, the Broncos do still have something valuable to play for. The Broncos have owned the Mountain West Conference and are two-time defending champions. While they don't sit atop the standings this year, they do still have a chance to win the conference once more, to become three-time defending champions, and to win the conference for its 7th time overall.
How Boise State Can Win the Mountain West
Currently, as of this writing, the SDSU Aztecs are atop the Mountain West standings, as they are 4-0 in conference. Boise State sits second with a 4-1 conference record, and with multiple teams behind them with two losses. The good news is that Boise State controls its own destiny. So long as they win out, they are into the conference championship. They will be favored over two of the final three teams they play, but they do face a tough matchup when they travel to San Diego to take on the Aztecs. Win that game, and Boise State likely hosts the championship game. Lose that game, and things get complicated, as Fresno State would hold a head-to-head win against BSU and have the same record in conference. The Broncos would need Fresno State to lose at least once to help them out, which they would be favored in their remaining games, so that is no guarantee.
While Boise State prefers to be playing for more, there is still a conference championship to defend and a title to be won this season. It may not have been the main goal when the season started, but it was one of the goals to check off this season. There is still plenty of football to play and plenty to play for. Go Broncos!
